1,750 Years of Struggle: Romania and Moldova’s Fight Against Forced Separations by Large Empires

1. Introduction: A Legacy of Involuntary Separation

Moldova’s history has been one of repeated separations from its Romanian roots, dictated not by the will of its people but by the ambitions of powerful empires, foreign interventions, and geopolitical strategies.
These separations, spanning 1,750 years, reveal a consistent pattern: external forces exploiting periods of regional vulnerability to divide and dominate the lands now known as Moldova.
Whether through treaties, military occupations, or imperial ambitions, Moldova has been involuntarily severed from Romanian territories and its historical identity time and again. These events are not merely historical footnotes but key moments that defined Moldova’s cultural and political trajectory.

2. The Eight Involuntary Separations of Moldova from Romanian Regions

2.1. 1st Century CE – Roman Withdrawal

Moldova wasn’t a distinct political entity in 1st Century CE, but the Roman Empire withdrawal from Dacia fragmented the region and disrupted its cultural development tied to Dacia, the Roman-controlled territory that included much of modern Romania. The withdrawal left territories like modern Moldova fragmented and vulnerable to external pressures. This severed the region from the Roman-influenced Dacian culture that later became a cornerstone of Romanian identity, exposing it to waves of migratory peoples and invasions.

2.2. 1775 – Habsburg Annexation of Bukovina

The Habsburg Empire annexed Bukovina, a northern Moldavian territory, without the consent of its people. This act divided Moldavia’s Romanian-speaking population, isolating Bukovina from the rest of Moldavia. Today, Bukovina is split between Ukraine and Romania, but this annexation marked the first significant division of Moldavia as a historic Romanian region.

2.3. 1812 – Russian Annexation of Bessarabia

The Treaty of Bucharest forced the Ottoman Empire to cede Bessarabia to the Russian Empire. This marked the first separation of eastern Moldavian territories from the broader Romanian cultural sphere. Bessarabia, encompassing most of what is now Moldova, was strategically critical and became a target of Russian imperial ambitions.

2.4. 1859 – Partial Unification of Moldavia and Wallachia

Moldavia and Wallachia united to form the foundation of modern Romania. However, Bessarabia, still under Russian control, was excluded from this unification. This incomplete union left eastern Moldavian territories isolated and under foreign domination, even as western Moldavia became part of a growing Romanian state.

2.5 1918 – Union with Romania

After the Russian Revolution and World War I, Bessarabia united with Romania in an effort to restore historical connections. This reunification was ratified by the local population but was never recognized by the Soviet Union. The union temporarily reunited Romania’s eastern historical regions but remained fragile due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

2.6. 1940 – Soviet Annexation of Bessarabia

Under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the Soviet Union forcibly annexed Bessarabia. Soviet troops occupied the region, brutally severing it from Romania and imposing a new political and cultural order. This marked one of the most definitive and violent separations in Moldovan history.

2.7. 1944 – Soviet Reoccupation

After World War II, the Soviet Union reoccupied Bessarabia, transforming it into the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. This reoccupation institutionalized Moldova’s separation from Romania, as the Soviet regime systematically suppressed Romanian culture and promoted Russification.

2.8. 1992 – Transnistria Conflict

Moldova faced further fragmentation when Transnistria, supported by Russian military forces, declared independence. This conflict not only divided Moldova internally but also distanced it further from its Romanian cultural and historical roots, as Transnistria aligned itself with Russian interests.

3. Historical and Cultural Context

Moldova’s separations were not just territorial but also cultural disconnections, driven by foreign imperial ambitions.
Successive powers the Romans, Habsburgs, Russians, and Soviets used political, military, and cultural strategies to dominate Moldova and undermine its ties to Romania.
Language suppression, forced migrations, and imposed political systems eroded Moldovan identity, making reunification increasingly challenging.
‘Even periods of unity, such as the 1918 union with Romania, were fragile and vulnerable to foreign interference.’
Each separation compounded these challenges.
The annexation of Bukovina in 1775 introduced a precedent for dividing Romanian territories.
‘The 1812 cession of Bessarabia to Russia initiated a century of foreign domination that disconnected Moldovan lands from Romanian governance.’
‘Soviet repressions in the 20th century further isolated Moldova, leaving it culturally fragmented.’

4. Conclusion: A Legacy of External Interference

Moldova’s history is a stark reminder of how the ambitions of empires can reshape the destiny of a region.
‘Over the course of 1,750 years, Moldova was involuntarily separated from Romanian regions eight times.’
These separations, driven by treaties, occupations, and imperial strategies, systematically disrupted the historical unity of Romanian territories and left Moldova isolated from its cultural and historical roots.
Yet, despite centuries of domination and division, Moldova’s cultural resilience endures. They’ve almost broken free of domination once again.
Its history, shaped by forced separations and foreign domination, reflects a broader story of survival, resilience, endurance and identity.
Understanding Moldova’s past underscores the importance of self-determination and the enduring connection of its people to their Romanian heritage.
