Analysis of Canadian Military and National Values (1900 to 2024) and Leadership Under PM Trudeau

From 2015 to 2024, Canada’s Liberal Party leadership under Prime Minister Trudeau has consistently stood against meaningful military investment and the timeless values foundational to strong, effective armed forces. This neglect extends beyond the military to the broader core values that have defined Canada from 1900 to 2024, revealing a disconnect between Canada’s historical identity and its current leadership.

The recent promise to meet NATO benchmarks by 2032, while neglecting today’s urgent needs, is emblematic of performative governance. Such promises lack authenticity and tangible commitment, serving as a smokescreen rather than a foundation for actionable progress.
Canada’s service members deserve leadership rooted in enduring military values such as discipline, honour, readiness, resilience, vigilance, sacrifice, unity, and more. These values are not negotiable; they are the bedrock of national security and sovereignty, tested and proven through Canada’s history of struggle and triumph.
True leadership transcends political experiments and optics-driven performances. It demands an anchored mindset one that values truth, real human needs, and time-tested principles. Canada’s future security and sovereignty cannot rest on hollow commitments or shifting narratives but must instead be guided by authentic, unwavering dedication to Canada’s foundational values.

Core Canadian Values (1900 to 2024) vs. Trudeau’s Variations

Universal Military Values

  1. Discipline Definition: Adherence to rules, structure, and rigorous standards of conduct. Trudeau’s Use: Rarely referenced; framed more around fiscal or regulatory discipline.
  2. Honour Definition: Upholding integrity, respect for service, and ethical standards. Trudeau’s Use: Limited to ceremonial occasions, not emphasized in broader policies.
  3. Sacrifice Definition: The act of giving up personal gain for the greater good. Trudeau’s Use: Generalized to societal challenges (e.g., climate action), not tied to military sacrifice.
  4. Resilience Definition: Strength to endure adversity and recover quickly. Trudeau’s Use: Framed as societal/community resilience for the purpose of the crisis COVID-19.
  5. Unity Definition: Shared purpose and collective strength within a nation or military. Trudeau’s Use: Modified as “diversity is our strength,” focusing on multicultural harmony over shared identity.
  6. Readiness Definition: Preparedness for immediate action in any scenario. Trudeau’s Use: Rarely emphasized, with mentions limited to procurement or timelines.
  7. Valour Definition: Bravery and courage in the face of danger, especially in combat. Trudeau’s Use: Limited to ceremonial mentions without broader integration into leadership rhetoric.
  8. Vigilance Definition: Constant watchfulness to anticipate and respond to threats. Trudeau’s Use: Limited to cybersecurity and intelligence discussions. Primarily focused on cybersecurity, particularly in the context of foreign interference and protecting digital infrastructure. However, these discussions are often intertwined with censorship and content regulation, which can blur the focus on vigilance as a purely defensive and proactive principle. Mentioned in intelligence contexts, primarily addressing threats such as terrorism and foreign espionage. The emphasis is often reactive and tied to surveillance rather than integrated into a broader, timeless framework of military or institutional vigilance.
  9. Capability Definition: Competence and skill to carry out duties effectively. Trudeau’s Use: Often tied to discussions of spending.
  10. Equality Definition: Fair treatment and equal opportunity for all, often linked to merit and service. Trudeau’s Use: Focused on inclusivity (gender, race, LGBTQ+, Indigenous rights) but disconnected from military meritocracy.
  11. Freedom Definition: Protecting individual liberties and national independence. Trudeau’s Use: Rarely linked to defense.
  12. Sovereignty Definition: Defense of a nation’s independence and borders. Trudeau’s Use: Often discussed in trade or reconciliation contexts, not national security.
  13. Justice Definition: Upholding fairness, law, and order. Trudeau’s Use: Focused on social justice, often sidelining law enforcement or military justice systems.
  14. Tradition Definition: Respect for historical customs and practices that define identity. Trudeau’s Use: Rarely highlighted, with a focus on progressive narratives over historical identity.
  15. Loyalty Definition: Allegiance to one’s nation, comrades, and shared values. Trudeau’s Use: Often replaced by a focus on reconciliation rather than national unity.
  16. Dignity Definition: Respect for human worth and professional conduct. Trudeau’s Use: Mentioned broadly, not tied to service or military contexts.
  17. Stewardship Definition: Responsibility for preserving and improving what one has been entrusted with. Trudeau’s Use: Framed environmentally but not linked to military leadership or institutional responsibility.
  18. Courage Definition: Facing challenges or threats with determination and bravery. Trudeau’s Use: Limited to moral courage in societal contexts, not linked to traditional military courage.
  19. Accountability Definition: Taking responsibility for one’s actions and outcomes. Trudeau’s Use: Often framed as transparency in government but not tied to military or operational accountability.
  20. Fortitude Definition: Emotional and physical strength to endure challenges. Trudeau’s Use: Rarely referenced explicitly; similar to resilience but broader.
  21. Innovation Definition: Advancing technology and tactics for greater effectiveness. Trudeau’s Use: Discussed in modernization debates, often tied to procurement.
  22. Pioneering Spirit Definition: Boldness in exploring and advancing new frontiers. Trudeau’s Use: Rarely mentioned; focus is on collective achievements rather than individual or institutional boldness.
  23. Performance Definition: Excellence in execution and results. Trudeau’s Use: Referenced in economic or societal outcomes, not as individual merit.
  24. Sacred Duty Definition: A profound obligation to defend values and people. Trudeau’s Use: Rarely emphasized; national duty often sidelined for broader societal responsibilities.

Conclusion

The findings clearly demonstrate that the current leadership’s rhetoric often modifies or sidesteps foundational Canadian and military values. This deviation undermines the authenticity of its national identity as Canadians and military identity of Canadian core security and public safety institutions, raising serious doubts about its capability to lead the modernization and buildout of Canada’s public safety and national security in the context of Cold War 2.0.
Leadership that reflects timeless and authentic values, timeless military values and Canadian core values developed through struggle of generations of pioneers, soldiers, police officers and professionals anchored in discipline, honour, and sovereigntyis essential to navigate the complexities of modern global conflicts.
The Liberal Party’s (2015 to 2024) chameleon personality changes, un-anchored knowledge base, real time identity changes and shifting narratives fail to provide this stability, leaving Canada’s armed forces and national security institutions vulnerable at a critical juncture in history.
