Restoring Justice for Millennials and Gen Z: Addressing Economic Inequities Through Fair Land Redistribution

Crown Land Transfers:

Over the last decade, Canada has transferred significant portions of Crown land to Indigenous groups through modern treaties and self-government agreements.
This has resulted in over 600,000 km² of land being transferred to Indigenous communities, particularly in provinces like British Columbia and in the Northern Territories.
The total land transferred through modern treaties and settlements varies by region, but it includes significant parcels of land in provinces like British Columbia and the territories (Fraser Institute) (Crown Relations Canada).
This has made Indigenous groups some of the largest landholders in Canada, fundamentally reshaping the landscape of land ownership in these regions. These transfers are part of ongoing efforts for reconciliation and addressing historical injustices (Crown Relations Canada) (Indigenous Services Canada).

Financial Commitments:

The federal government has also committed $200 billion in direct payments, programs, and compensation to Indigenous groups as part of reconciliation efforts, which includes reparations for the residential school system (Crown Relations Canada).
A $200 billion transfer figure is supported by Budget 2024. This figure encapsulates long-term federal spending committed to Indigenous priorities over the last decade, including child welfare, education, health, housing, and infrastructure (Crown Relations Canada).
While these efforts are attempting to repair the harms of the past, the transfers have also contributed to the diminishing availability of Crown land, which has traditionally been held in public trust for the broader Canadian population.
This reduction in Crown land could affect future generations, as much of it was historically used for public purposes such as conservation and recreation (Fraser Institute).

Economic Challenges for Millennials and Gen Z:

Millennials and Gen Z face a vastly different and less favourable economic reality compared to previous generations. The rise of inflation, national debt, and real estate speculation has contributed to the rapid escalation of housing and asset prices, eroding the purchasing power of these younger generations.
Studies show that Millennials and Gen Z face housing prices several times higher (relative to income) than what Baby Boomers and Gen X experienced (Fraser Institute) (Crown Relations Canada).
Unlike the Baby Boomers or Gen X, who benefited from lower housing costs and stronger economic growth, Millennials and Gen Z are now burdened with the consequences of policies that were designed to sustain current consumption such as low interest rates and large public debt.
This has inflated housing and asset prices, making it significantly more difficult for younger generations to build wealth (Fraser Institute).
MPs like Raquel Dancho are beginning to recognize the economic injustices facing younger Canadians. Dancho, for instance, has spoken out about the housing crisis and the obstacles Millennials and Gen Z face in achieving home-ownership, highlighting the economic disparity between generations (Crown Relations Canada).
The consequences of national debt and inflation are clear: much of this debt has been used to fuel asset and housing inflation, benefiting older generations at the expense of younger ones.
As a result, Millennials and Gen Z are facing inflated housing prices, rising commodity costs, and reduced purchasing power further limiting their ability to accumulate wealth(Fraser Institute).
This imbalance will have long-term effects on wealth distribution, as younger generations struggle to access affordable housing and invest in assets that traditionally lead to economic security.

Generational Injustice:

In contrast to Edmund Burke’s philosophy of generational responsibility, which argues that each generation should leave behind a stable and sustainable society, Millennials and Gen Z are inheriting a world marked by economic imbalance, reduced opportunities, and geopolitical uncertainty.
The shift in technological and military power toward the East, with rising powers such as China and Russia, further complicates the global landscape, increasing volatility and potentially positioning the younger generation to bear the brunt of global changes (Fraser Institute).
‘This creates a profound generational injustice.’
To correct this, it is only fair to consider transferring equivalent portions of land at least 600,000 km²to Millennials and Gen Z, who are significant in population size.
Real estate remains a key driver of inequality, and redistributing land would provide a meaningful way to address the economic disparities that previous generations have worsened through policies favouring short-term growth over long-term sustainability (Fraser Institute) (Crown Relations Canada).
By addressing both the historical land transfers to Indigenous groups and the economic imbalances caused by inflation, debt, and asset speculation, we can work toward undoing the injustice inflicted on younger generations and ensure a more equitable future for all Canadians.
Additionally, it is important to remain vigilant about the potential role of media, academia, and government in facilitating this wealth transfers behind the scenes potentially in combination with empathy driving stories of injustice to further nurture such wealth transfers.
If these institutions are complicit in sustaining wealth transfer policies through public perception management (CBC, University administrators and government speeches and land policy administrators from the cities), such as policies that disproportionately benefit older generations, transparency and corrective actions are essential to ensure fairness for Millenials and Gen Z (Crown Relations Canada).
